Apparently, I have some pretty clear opinions about punctuation

This week my sweet husband left me a note before he went on his last trip. It was appropriately sweet and funny.

When I commented to him about how something he wrote made me laugh, he said, "I'm glad you liked the note. I really tried to avoid using too many parentheses."

To which I replied, "Why were you trying to avoid parentheses?"

"Well," he said, "You once told me that you weren't a big fan of parentheses. That you would much prefer it if people used hyphens more often."

And before I could even express my surprise and wonder that I ever said that to him, I realized that this is exactly the sort of weird, English teacher thing I would say. I am blessed to have a husband who can appreciate and respect my grammatical idiosyncrasies.

I really like quotes, exclamation points, and.........dramatic.........long lines.........of periods! Unfortunately, I have never really understood hyphens.

I'm sure we can both agree that one thing which is always overused is the exclamation point! Rats (I did it again - oh no! parenthesis! GAH!!!)!

This is totally funny. And you have a nice husband. :)

I prefer semicolons; however, I think that between semicolons and dashes, people prefer dashes.

I have thought often of our conversation about this as I have been writing emails--wasn't it just the other night?
Oops... there I did it without even meaning too (I prefer the dash too, but then I realized that in writing this, I was going to use a parentheses!) I guess I pick the dash first but to provide variety, I use both. Isn't it nice that we have so many options?!

too funny. i tend to use all lowercase and over use the ... whatever that is. I'll make a mental note on the parentheses thing.

I'm not really fond of colons or semi-colons. I feel I never had adequate instruction on how to use them pre-high school. Therefore their use in the universe is insignificant.

How funny, b/c in case you didn't notice I do use () and ... quite a bit in my blog. I was just thinking earlier today, though, that if I ever wrote a book, I would LOVE for you to be the editor!
